Why Don't More Women Play Games?

This was the question posed to us by local gaming company Rebel Play.
The problem with women not playing games is probably one which has urked games manufacturers.
Rebel Play discussed a lot of possible reasons for this with us from aesthetics to justifications (one point raised was that women could be far less likely to willingly waste their time on things such as a games console).
This could be a difficult question to get to the bottom of as in certain circles it may be cool for a girl to play games, whereas in others it could be frowned upon. Therefore any responses that you were to come across may need to be taken with a pinch of salt.
However, one thing which stuck out to me was the themes and marketing of best selling games for consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox. War and football games are arguably amongst the best selling games internationally. The themes of each of these are traditionally masculine and this preconception is not often negated within the marketing campaigns for this type of gaming title.
